How the stones work
Basalt is a dense volcanic rock that holds heat for a long time and gives it back evenly. The stones are heated to a controlled temperature, and the therapist checks the warmth on your skin before placing them. They are used in two ways: held in the hand, they extend the massage stroke; placed and left still, they warm one area while the rest of the body is worked on.
The feeling is deep without being strong. Back and shoulder muscles let go under the heat, which lets the therapist go further with less pressure than in a standard massage.
The best time of year for it
In Marrakech, winter and spring evenings are cool, sometimes properly cold in thick-walled riads and in the villas of the Palmeraie. That is the ideal season: the warmth of the stones is then a real comfort.
At the height of summer, when evenings are still very hot, we suggest a relaxing or draining massage instead. The stone treatment is still possible in an air-conditioned room, but it is less pleasant.
When to avoid it
As with any heat treatment, a few situations call for something else: pregnancy, significant varicose veins, recent sunburn, irritated skin, or problems with circulation or sensation, for example with diabetes.
If any of these apply to you, mention it when booking and we will suggest a suitable massage without stones, for the same length.

Frequently asked questions
Are the stones scalding?
No. They are warm, not scalding, and the therapist tests them on their own skin and then on yours before placing them. If a stone feels too hot, say so and it comes off straight away.
Are the stones cleaned between clients?
Yes, after every treatment. The linen is also changed at every appointment.
Can hot stones be combined with argan oil?
Yes; the stones glide over a massage oil, and argan is one of the options. Mention it in your request.
Is it a good choice after an Atlas hike?
Yes, the heat helps tired muscles let go. If you mostly have aches and specific sore spots, the sports massage is more targeted.
