Why argan, and not any oil
The argan tree only grows wild in south-western Morocco, around the Souss region. Its oil comes in two forms: roasted for cooking, with a nutty taste, and unroasted for the skin. The second is the one used for massage.
It has a very practical quality for a treatment: it is fluid, glides without sticking and absorbs well enough not to leave a greasy film once the session is over. Warmed slightly before it is applied, it makes the first strokes more pleasant, especially in the evening when the air cools.
Pressure you can talk about
Unlike the relaxing massage, which stays gentle from start to finish, the signature massage adapts to what you feel. After a long walk, the pressure can be firmer on the calves and lower back. After a flight, the therapist spends more time on the neck and shoulders.
You can ask for more or less at any moment. That is the rule for all our massages, but it matters especially here, because this treatment is meant to fit your day.
Before or after a hammam
Argan is also the oil that traditionally ends the hammam ritual. If you plan to have both during your stay, the logical order is hammam first, massage second: freshly scrubbed skin absorbs the oil better and the feeling lasts longer.
There is no need to have them on the same day. Many travellers take the hammam early in their stay and the argan massage on the second-to-last evening.

Frequently asked questions
Does argan oil stain the sheets?
Very little, as it absorbs well. In any case we put our own linen on the table, and a towel between the table and the floor if you like. Your hotel's or riad's linen is not used.
Can I react to argan oil?
It is rare, but argan oil is pressed from a kernel. If you are allergic to nuts, mention it when booking and the therapist will use a neutral oil instead.
Can I buy the same oil afterwards?
If you want to take argan home, buy it from a cooperative or a shop that clearly states its origin and that it is the cosmetic grade, and check that it is not roasted.
Is the argan massage suitable for men?
Yes; it is in fact the massage men choose most often when they do not want a sports massage. The pressure can be firmer, and you can ask for a male therapist if you prefer.
