Which spa should you choose in Marrakech: hotel, hammam or in-room?

There are four ways to get a massage in Marrakech: a hotel spa, a traditional neighbourhood hammam, a day spa in the medina or Gueliz, and a treatment where you stay. None is best for everyone. Here, plainly, is what each one gives you, what it asks of you, and how to choose for your trip.

The hotel spa: the facilities, if you go to them

Marrakech’s large hotels often have fine spas: an indoor pool, a steam hammam, a relaxation room. It is the most complete option if you want to spend half a day there, and the simplest if you are staying in that hotel.

The catch is the journey when you are staying elsewhere: book a slot, take a taxi, then head back after the treatment, relaxed but back in the traffic. Slots follow the spa’s hours, and rooms set up for two are limited.

The traditional hammam: the local ritual, without the comfort

The neighbourhood hammam is an institution: a hot room, water, black soap and the kessa mitt. People go to get properly clean, often with friends or family, and it is the most authentic experience in the city, for a modest price.

It helps to know the codes, though. The space is shared and separate for women and men, the mood is lively rather than hushed, and massage is not always offered. Bring your own things or buy what you need there, and let someone show you the first time.

The day spa: the middle ground in town

In between, the medina and Gueliz have many day spas, often set in old riads, that pair a hammam with a massage. The packages are clear and some addresses are excellent.

Quality varies a great deal from one to the next, so read recent reviews, check what is included and plan the way back. Crossing the medina’s lanes at night, freshly massaged, is not always the most restful part of the day.

The in-room spa: the treatment comes to you

Here the therapist arrives with a professional table, clean linen and the oils, and sets up in your room, your lounge or by the pool. All you prepare is a little space, and after the treatment you stay right where you are.

It is also the only option that puts two therapists side by side in your riad, or runs treatments back to back for a group in a villa. Its limits are plain: no pool and no steam room. The hammam takes place in your bathroom, with steam from the shower, black soap, kessa and rhassoul.

How to choose for your stay

If your hotel has a spa and you want its pool and steam, book it: that is what it is for. If the local ritual matters to you and a shared space does not bother you, try a neighbourhood hammam at least once.

If you come back tired from a day in the medina, if you are a couple, a family or a group of friends in a villa, or if your riad has no spa, a treatment where you stay is the easiest: you pick the time, we come, and you do not go out again.

7 things to check before booking a home massage

A price confirmed in writing before the appointment
Not a “from” figure over the phone, but the exact amount for the treatment, the length and the number of people. Ours arrives on WhatsApp with your booking summary.
Payment after the treatment
Be wary of a deposit asked for before anything is confirmed. We take no card details, and you pay in person at the end.
The choice of a female or male therapist
A normal request, to make when you book. We confirm it according to who is free for your slot.
Proper equipment, brought to you
A real massage table, clean linen and the oils. On a bed, the therapist’s posture and the pressure of the massage both suffer.
Your accommodation’s permission
Some hotels control access for outside providers. Give us the property’s name and we check before confirming.
The area covered and the arrival time
A provider coming from far away arrives late. We cover eight neighbourhoods, from the medina to the Ourika road.
Clear cancellation terms
They should be stated before you book. Ours: free cancellation up to 4 hours before the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best spa in Marrakech?

There is no single answer: it depends on what you want. For a pool and steam, a hotel spa. For the local ritual, a neighbourhood hammam. To relax without going out, as a couple or a group, a treatment where you stay.

Is a home massage more expensive than a spa?

Not necessarily, and it is easy to check: we send you the exact price on WhatsApp before the appointment, with no commitment. Compare it with the spa you have in mind; you pay nothing until you have confirmed, and then only after the treatment.

Can you have a real hammam at home?

Yes, in its at-home form: steam from your shower, black soap, a kessa scrub and a rhassoul mask, finished with argan oil, in your own bathroom. What is missing is a public hammam’s steam room; in exchange, no one is there but you.

Does an in-room spa work in a hotel?

Yes, in most cases. Give the property’s name when you book: we check access before confirming, and we arrive discreetly, with the equipment in a closed bag.

Can I book a treatment for this evening?

Often, yes, especially from late afternoon. Pick a time in the booking form or send us a WhatsApp message; for a couples treatment or a late slot in high season, booking the day before is safer.
